Activated Charcoal for Birds

Miss Clairice is starting out on another quiet day. Everything else is normal. She ate well yesterday, socialized, playfully hormonal at times, jealous as usual, poop looks fine… I did find some grommets on the shower curtain missing. She doesn’t seem depressed per se, but one of the symptoms of heavy metal poising is depression.

As a precautionary measure, I put 1/8 teaspoon of activated charcoal and lemon in her water. Activated charcoal binds to toxins in the body and expels them in excrement (for humans too).

Because the water is black. I had to take a few sips and show her that it was good. The first few times, she just dipped her beak in without taking a drink, then looked at me to show me she was being cooperative. I had to take a few more sips and encourage her before she swallowed it.

A few minutes later she called me in to pick her up and start her day. So far so good.

If this were a true emergency, she would have blood in her stool, lethargy and vomiting. It happens fast. I am just taking some precautionary measures and will watch her today.

Everything except her mood looks good, and even that is not completely out of the ordinary. If something is happening that she is uncomfortable with, if there’s an earthquake, if I’m resting, etc. she typically wants to stay in the bathroom.
